After achieving my first music teaching qualification (LTCL), I went on to study classical piano and voice at the Birmingham Conservatoire. I studied with Mark Racz, now Deputy Principal at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with a 1st class BA hons degree. I studied at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, and undertook a Masters Degree at Manchester University.
I teach at the Leeds College of Music and also privately from home. I have a wealth of piano and vocal teaching experience, working with students of all ages and abilities, from the raw beginner to the advanced diploma student. I am experienced in teaching students with specific needs such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.
As a singer I specialise in Musical Theatre and Pop styles. In piano I teach Classical and Pop. I have an excellent pass rate in entering my students for graded exams with well over 100 successes to date. Many of my students perform regularly at concerts and festivals. More importantly though, all my students thoroughly enjoy their lessons.
My teaching career has also included holding workshops at the Access to Music colleges. I have also designed and delivered music workshops for children exploiting the numerous beneficial effects of music exploration on the child’s educational and social development. Indeed whilst volunteering in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and in Kathmandu, Nepal over the last few years, l’ve been delighted to hold music workshops with the local children, promoting the use of song and movement to aid learning and team work.
I am delighted to be a member of Key Largo Trio performing at events and weddings around the North of England. We play all styles of music from pop to classical. In this video we’re showcasing some of our favourite vintage songs.
I perform classical music in concerts…
… and solo as a pianist/singer at all kinds of public events and parties. See ccowanpianist.co.uk
I also perform as part of the quirky band Vesper Walk.
In the last few years I have been privileged to perform as a member of York City Gospel Choir at exciting venues around the area, including the Grand Opera House, York and Selby Abbey.
Singing as key soloist, in the last season I have performed excerpts from Handel’s Soulful Messiah and diverse repertoire including songs by U2, Seal, Eva Cassidy, Mariah Carey, Bill Withers and Whitney Houston.
As part of a song writing duo I have co-written 4 albums including 3 for Vesper Walk and 1 for Holly Taymar. We wrote the dark musical ‘The Fallen Angel Show’ which we took to the Edinburgh Festival in 2015. The Fringe Review said it was a ‘magical hour of musical theatre’. We also wrote the musical play ‘Really Really Want’ which is currently in development having successfully previewed at York Theatre Royal in November 2016.
We love collaborating and are currently working with the fabulous Gracie Falls (Unsigned Singer/Songwriter of the Year 2016), Livvy Rooks, Beth McCarthy and Laura Kindelan among others.
